Is My Bedroom Big Enough for A King-Size Mattress?

Through the years you’ve probably had a twin-size mattress, a full-size, or maybe even a queen-size mattress. But, for the longest time, you’ve had your heart set on a king-size mattress, and you’ve been asking yourself if your bedroom is big enough for a king-size. The true answer is, it’s contingent on several factors. But to fully decide if you should get a king-size mattress, let’s look at all the factors involved in this decision.

    1. What type of king-size mattress should I buy?

King size mattresses actually come in many sizes. You most likely have heard of the Standard or California King size mattresses, but there are several more.

    • Standard King, also called the Eastern King mattress
    • California King, also called the Western King mattress
    • Wyoming King
    • Texas King
    • Alaskan King

    2. With all these mattress choices how do you decide? What’s the difference?

There are two things that differentiate the mattresses: width and length. It’s important in knowing these sizes before you go shopping. If you’ve heard the saying while eating, “my eyes were bigger than my stomach”, it works the same way when shopping for mattresses. You may have grandiose visions of a huge mattress in your bedroom, but if you don’t know the sizes…you may be saying “my eyes were bigger than my bedroom” and you’ll regret your purchase. Below are the width and lengths of each mattress.

    • Standard/Eastern King: 76”x80”
    • California/Western King: 72”x84”
    • Wyoming King: 84”x84”
    • Texas King: 80”x98”
    • Alaskan King: 108”x108”

Another thing you need to keep in mind is your own height and the way you sleep. If you are over six feet tall and move a lot in your sleep, be aware that you will not be comfortable on a California King. No one wants their feet to hang over the end of the bed.

When it comes to price differences on average, king-size mattresses cost about $400 more than their queen-size counterparts. Differences in pricing for queen vs. king size bed models depend on how expensive or inexpensive the mattress is. For example, a mattress that costs $400 in a queen size may only cost $450 or $500 in a king, whereas a $2,500 queen-size model can easily cost more than $3,000 in a king-size

    3. Will a king-size mattress fit in my bedroom?

There are no hard and fast rules on adding a king-size mattress to your bedroom. There are, however, things to keep in mind with the addition. For real comfort in your space, you need to make sure there is a minimum of two feet of room between the mattress and the surrounding space. This includes your bed frame and accessory pieces. Pay attention to any storage or drawers you may have on your king-size bed. You will want plenty of space to easily access these things.

The other obstacle you may encounter is simply getting the mattress in your room. Make sure to measure any doorways and ask yourself if the mattress will fit through any stairways. Mattresses can weigh 150 pounds or more. Make sure and have a family member or friend help you carry it.
