    Bedroom Furniture Buying Guide

Expert tips to help you choose with confidence.

    Updated Oct. 2026

    • Queen bed: a 60 x 80-inch mattress that fits a 10x10-foot room with 30-inch walkways
    • King bed: a 76 x 80-inch mattress that needs a room of about 12x12 feet
    • Walkways: 30 inches on both sides and at the foot of the bed
    • In front of a dresser: 36 inches, so the drawers open fully
    • Bed height: the top of the mattress at about knee height, 20 to 25 inches from the floor
    • Nightstand height: within 2 to 3 inches of the top of the mattress
    • Slat spacing: 3 inches or less for most foam and hybrid mattresses
    • Small room: a storage bed or a tall chest saves more floor space than a wide dresser

    • Beds. Panel, sleigh, platform, storage, upholstered, and poster styles. Storage beds add drawers underneath, which is often the simplest way to gain space in a room with nowhere to put a dresser. Tall poster beds look best under ceilings of 8 feet or higher. Shop beds.
    • Dressers, chests, and media chests. A dresser is wide and low, with a top that typically holds a mirror. A chest of drawers is tall and narrow, giving you similar storage on less floor space. A media chest combines drawers with a top sized for a bedroom TV. Shop dressers, chests of drawers, and media chests.
    • Nightstands. A place to keep a lamp, a phone, and a book within reach. Drawers hide clutter, while open shelves suit baskets and larger books. Shop nightstands.
    • Armoires, wardrobes, and trunks. Hanging space and shelves for when the closet runs short. A trunk at the foot of the bed stores spare blankets and gives guests somewhere to set a suitcase. Shop armoires and wardrobes and trunks.
    • Vanities, mirrors, and jewelry storage. A vanity table gives you a dedicated place to get ready, a bedroom mirror brightens the room and makes it read larger, and jewelry organizers keep accessories sorted. Shop vanity tables, mirrors, and jewelry organizers.
    • Benches, seating, shelving, and organization. A bench or a chair gives you somewhere to sit while you get dressed, and shelving and organization pieces handle books and everyday items. Shop benches, seating, shelving, and organization.
    • Complete bedroom sets. Bed, storage, and nightstands already selected to work together, if you would rather shop a full room at once. Shop bedroom sets.

    • What size bed fits my room? Leave 30 inches of walkway on both sides and at the foot of the bed, so you can get in and out and still make the bed. A 10x10-foot room fits a queen, while a king needs closer to 12x12. The Bed Size & Room Guide card shows the smallest room for each bed size.
    • How tall should the bed be? Sit on the edge of the mattress. Your feet should rest flat on the floor, which puts the top of the mattress at around 20 to 25 inches. Add the frame, foundation, and mattress heights together when you check, since a thick mattress can add several inches over what the frame alone suggests.
    • How tall should the nightstands be? Aim for within 2 to 3 inches of the top of the mattress. A nightstand that sits well below the mattress means reaching down for a glass of water in the dark.
    • Will my bed frame work with my mattress? Platform beds do not need a box spring. Many foam and hybrid mattress warranties require slats spaced no more than 3 inches apart, so check that spacing before you buy. If you are considering an adjustable base, confirm the frame is compatible, and choose your mattress and foundation on the same visit.
    • How much storage do I actually need? Count the hanging space your closet already gives you, then fill the gap. A wide dresser suits a room with wall space to spare, a tall chest does similar work in a smaller footprint, and a storage bed or an armoire helps when neither the closet nor the floor has room left.

Couples furnishing a master bedroom who want a queen or king, two nightstands, and a dresser with a mirror, often adding a chest for extra drawers or a bench at the foot of the bed. Households setting up a guest room, where a full or queen bed, a nightstand or two, and a small chest cover almost everything. Anyone working with a small bedroom who needs a storage bed or a tall chest to do the job a wide dresser cannot fit. And shoppers replacing a room piece by piece who want storage and nightstands that still read as one room.

Measure the full path from your front door to the bedroom, not just the room itself. A headboard that fits the floor plan can still be a tight squeeze up a staircase or around a landing. Check your ceiling height against tall poster beds and armoires, and check the window sill height if the bed is going under a window. Confirm slat spacing against your mattress warranty, since most foam and hybrid mattresses want slats no more than 3 inches apart. Leave 36 inches in front of any dresser or chest so the drawers open fully. If the bed is going upstairs, choose Elite Delivery: the team brings each piece inside, either pre-assembled or assembled on site, including the headboard, footboard, and rails. In-Carton Drop-Off leaves boxed items on the ground floor only, with no assembly.

Room sizes assume 30 inches of walkway on both sides and at the foot of the bed, and they do not include a dresser. Add its depth plus 36 inches in front for the drawers. Closet doors, window placement, and traffic paths through the room can all shift what fits.

    Bedroom FAQs

A queen or a full fits a 10x10-foot room with 30 inches of walkway on both sides and at the foot of the bed. A king leaves too little room to walk around comfortably.

Choose a full bed, or place a twin against the wall to free up floor space. A storage bed or a tall chest of drawers can replace a wide dresser, and a mirror helps the room feel larger. A Bob Mills Furnishing Sales Host can help match pieces to your actual measurements.

Most master (or primary) bedrooms use a queen or king bed, two nightstands, and a dresser with a mirror. Couples often add a chest for extra drawers, a bench at the foot of the bed, or an armoire when closet space runs short.

A full or queen bed, one or two nightstands, and a chest or small dresser cover most guest rooms. A trunk at the foot of the bed stores spare bedding and gives guests a place to set a suitcase.

Aim for a nightstand within 2 to 3 inches of the top of the mattress, so a lamp and a glass of water stay within easy reach. Pieces from the same bedroom collection are usually sized to match.

Beds, dressers, chests of drawers, nightstands, media chests, armoires and wardrobes, vanity tables, mirrors, benches and seating, trunks, shelving, jewelry storage, and organization pieces, along with mattresses, foundations, and adjustable bases.

A dresser is wide and low, with a top that usually holds a mirror. A chest of drawers is tall and narrow, offering similar storage on a smaller footprint. Both are often built to match within the same collection.

Yes. Beds, dressers, nightstands, and storage are all sold separately, so you can start with a bed and add a dresser or nightstands later. Buying coordinated pieces together through Companions Pricing can lower the combined price.

Yes, with three options. Elite Delivery brings each piece inside, either pre-assembled or assembled on site, including the bed frame. It's a paid service priced by order and location. Why Shop Bedroom Furniture at Bob Mills

A new bed and a new mattress often go together, and Bob Mills handles both in one trip. BedMatch®, available at all 12 showrooms, measures your body and gives a color-coded recommendation that narrows the mattresses to the ones that suit how you sleep. A Furnishing Sales Host then checks that your frame, foundation, and mattress work together before you buy.

Buying coordinated pieces through Companions Pricing can cost less than purchasing a bed, a dresser, and nightstands separately, since the bundle is priced as a group rather than piece by piece. Our Furnishing Sales Hosts work commission-free, and Bob Mills has been family-owned since 1971, with the same prices at every showroom.

Bedroom furniture gets more daily use than it sometimes gets credit for. Drawers open and close every morning, and a bed frame carries real weight for years. Many of our bedroom collections use solid wood construction and dovetailed drawers, depending on the specific set, so ask a Furnishing Sales Host about the construction details on any piece you're considering. Once you've chosen, order online or in store, then pick up free with Customer Pickup or choose Elite Delivery, which brings the pieces inside pre-assembled or assembles them on site. Financing options are available to fit different budgets and credit situations.
