Bob Mills Furniture Store Anniversary Spotlight – Odessa

In 1971, the very first Bob Mills Furniture store opened its doors in Oklahoma City. Being in business for 45 years is an honor and very humbling. It has only been made possible with the support of thousands of people throughout many communities. So, as a part of our 45th anniversary celebration, we are spotlighting communities that have become part of who we are today.

When we look at new communities, it’s more than just opening a furniture store. It’s making certain we bring something different to the community and benefit the consumer. We also choose communities because of who they are, and Odessa is comprised of such an amazing and vibrant group of people!

A Few Special Things Odessa Has to Offer

Chris Kyle Memorial Plaza

As a veteran of the Iraq war, Chris Kyle served as a Navy Seal and sniper throughout four tours of duty and received numerous commendations for valor and service. These commendations included a Silver Star, four Bronze Stars, with many other formal honors, yet still do not tell the story of the true modern day hero he was to both country and his brothers in arms. However, the memorial is designed not so much to glorify this exceptional soldier, but in his name, provide a place for reflection, humility, and to give thanks to those who have given so much protect this nation and our freedoms.

His story and popularity captured national attention with the release of the biography, “American Sniper” and the blockbuster movie to follow based on the same. His life, tragically cut short, is represented tastefully, commemorating his life as not only a soldier but a husband and father, with low cut polished marble meant to inspire reflection. The memorial pays homage to the symbolism of the three-trident inlay in the limestone path, representing both the Roman god Neptune and the Navy Seals who also commonly are identified by the emblem. While Chris Kyle, a son of Odessa Texas, is the focal point of the memorial, this limestone paths lead to two more adjacent memorials that honor the many and nameless other brave Navy Seals who fought to defend and uphold the freedoms of this nation before, after, and at Chris’s side. For directions or to donate to the memorial, please visit the Odessa Chamber of Commerce Website.

Presidential Archives & Leadership Library in Odessa Texas

Presidential Archives and Leadership Library

In 1964 shortly after Kennedy’s assassination, The Presidential Archives & Leadership Library started with a as a collection of historic presidential campaign memorabilia as a room in the basement of the public library. Over the years, the collection increased in size with items such as portraits, political cartoons, a massive cache of newspapers, publications, and documents pertaining to the presidency. Because of the volume of collected exhibit materials, it expanded in 1969 to occupy the entire basement of the library and was named “The Presidential Library”. In 1981 when the public library moved to a new building but the Presidential Library exhibits remained and took over the entire building. Growth of the exhibits and the popularity of the museum continued and in 2003, opened to the public in its new complex on the campus of the University of Texas in the Permian Basin.

One of the museum exhibits is the restored family home of former Odessa residents George H. W. and Barbara Bush, as well as their son George W. Bush from 1948-1949. This modest little house once sat East 17th Street in Odessa and is open to the public. Another exhibit included a replica of the white house built on a 1/12th scale level of accuracy. Now more than fifty years after its inception, it is now known as the Presidential Archives & Leadership Library and stands as a national treasure with its unrivaled collection of historic artifacts and exhibits. It is currently administered by the John Ben Shepperd Public Leadership Institute in Odessa Texas and is a must see when travelling to the city.

globe theater in odessa texas

The Globe Theater

The Globe Theater began as a dream of a high school English teacher in 1948 to build a replica of Shakespeare’s Globe Theater in London. This teacher, Marjorie Morris, realized her dream when the Globe Theater was dedicated in 1964. Although much closer to the Dniester river than the Thames, the Globe has featured Elizabethan performances from Macbeth to Othello. After all a rose by any other name would smell as sweet!

The circular design incorporates the stage with the audience and intimately intertwines performer with spectator, whether it be experiencing the villainy and plotting of Claudius against Hamlet or the treachery of Regan as she removes the eyes King Lear. Having such a theater providing the haunting nostalgia of the original stage in London with the foreboding tales of William Shakespeare is a decadence. It is a special preservation of culture offered right here of all places, in Odessa Texas. Currently in a process of revitalization, the theater has recently replaced seating and carpets with a long list of a $750,000 project to ensure it’s integrity and contribution for years to come. The theater makes its home in the Odessa Community College campus, and tickets are available online.
