Bob Mills Furniture Store in Lubbock

Bob Mills Furniture Store Anniversary Spotlight – Lubbock

In 1971, the very first Bob Mills Furniture store opened its doors in Oklahoma City. Being in business for 45 years is an honor and very humbling. It has only been made possible with the support of thousands of people throughout many communities. So, as a part of our 45th anniversary celebration, we are spotlighting communities that have become part of who we are today.

When we look at new communities, it’s more than just opening a furniture store. It’s making certain we bring something different to the community and benefit the consumer. We also choose communities because of who they are, and Lubbock is comprised of such an amazing and vibrant group of people!

Silent Wings Museum Lubbock

Silent Wings Museum

During World War II gliders were state of the art stealth technology of the time. These silent aircraft were used for transporting troops and supplies such as ammunition and blood plasma. Often towed by a C-47 powered with roaring engines, these scantily insulated gliders were far from silent for the pilots on the inside. Earning the nicknames “tow targets” and “flying coffins”, these machines often flew one way missions, breaching the lines of France and Normandy during the critical near end of the war. The pilots wore silver wings with the letter “G”, which was actually said to stand for GUTS.

The museum  was formed in 1971 by surviving glider pilots who served in the war in the U.S. Army Air Force’s Glider Program. The Silent Wings Museum commemorates the bravery of these pilots and houses artifacts and historic reminders of the critical roll that these machines played in World War II prior to the advent of the helicopter used later introduced to modern warfare. The exhibits inspire not only fascination but also a reverence for the danger, sacrifices, and stakes that were at risk for all of these young soldiers and pilots.
