The Importance of Spinal Alignment and Sleep

So, what is the big deal about spinal alignment?

Spinal Alignment

The answer is easy… EVERYTHING!

“Your spine isn’t just essential to keep you upright, it also protects your central nervous system. When the spine is out of alignment, the central nervous system can’t transfer the information from your body to the brain,” explained Dr. Angie Shepardson, Doctor of Chiropractic for Bob Mills Sleep Spa.

Think of it this way, when your car is out of alignment it doesn’t drive like it should. Same thing with your body, when you are out of alignment you don’t function well. People experience back pain, headaches, problems  with digestion and joint pain.

“That is why it is important to have good spinal alignment when you sleep. This means sleeping on a mattress and pillow with the right supportability,” added Dr. Angie.

Dr. Angie’s Tips for Better Spinal Alignment

Here are some of Dr. Angie’s tips to help you get better spinal alignment and help reduce back, shoulder and neck pain.

Side Sleepers – If you are a side sleeper, sleep with a pillow between your knees. This helps keep your knees in position, keeping your spine from twisting while you sleep.

Back Sleepers – If you are a back sleeper, use a MOOD base to elevate your feet. Taking pressure off the lower back can help ease pain.

Stomach Sleepers – Stomach sleeper? STOP. Sleeping on your stomach can actually increase back pain.” When you sleep on your stomach, you are forcing your spine to bend forward which can cause more pain and also can increase the chance of neck pain due to twisting the head. This can also cause your breathing to be impacted,” said Dr. Angie.

The Most Important Tip For Spinal Alignment

Choose a mattress and pillow with the proper support you need while you sleep. “Your pillow makes up 30 percent of your sleep comfort,” added Dr. Angie. “Having the right mattress and pillow are essential to restful sleep. And, BedMatchTM can help you determine the mattress support you need. One of our sleep experts or I can guide you to find the proper pillow and mattress combination.”
